Leica M11 is not easy to review, since it's so different and so simple. However, I have challenged myself and made a complete review of that imperfect yet fantastic (and pricey) rangefinder camera.
Overall, the Leica M11 is a beautiful camera that excels in delivering high-quality images with a distinct shooting experience.
Pros:
Exceptional Image Quality:
The 60 MP full-frame sensor delivers high-resolution, sharp, and detailed images with impressive dynamic range. Triple Resolution Technology allows shooting in 60 MP, 36 MP, and 18 MP, balancing file size and image detail.
Classic Rangefinder Experience:
The optical rangefinder gives photographers a unique manual focus experience, ideal for those who prefer a traditional, tactile approach to photography. Compact, well-built design with the signature Leica look and feel.
Lightweight Body:
Weighing about 20% less than its predecessor, the M11 has a brass top plate, contributing to durability while still being portable.
Battery Life:
The larger 1800mAh battery provides significantly longer usage, offering up to 700 shots on a single charge when using the optical viewfinder.
Improved Digital Features:
USB-C port for direct file transfer and charging without removing the battery. Internal memory of 64 GB, which complements the SD card slot for flexibility. Improved high ISO performance up to ISO 50,000.
Design and Build:
Precision-engineered, durable materials (brass and magnesium alloy), with a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that Leica is known for. Modular sensor design and absence of a low-pass filter, which maximizes sharpness.
Connectivity:
Includes Leica FOTOS app support for easy transfer of images to smartphones and remote control options.
Cons:
Price:
The Leica M11 is extremely expensive, making it inaccessible to many photographers. It’s often seen as a luxury item rather than purely a tool for image-making.
Manual Focus Only:
The lack of autofocus might be a dealbreaker for those who rely on fast, accurate focusing in dynamic shooting situations.
Learning Curve:
The rangefinder focusing system requires time and practice to master, which may deter those accustomed to modern autofocus systems.
No Built-in Image Stabilization:
The absence of in-body image stabilization can be limiting, especially when shooting handheld in low light conditions.
No Video Features:
Leica M11 is only a photography tool, its video capabilities are non existent :)
Screen:
The rear screen, while high-resolution, is fixed and doesn’t articulate.
File Sizes:
The 60 MP sensor produces large files, which can be taxing on storage space and post-processing systems, especially if you're shooting in full resolution regularly.
